Huntington Beach police have arrested a Santa Ana resident in connection with a Sunday afternoon shooting that left a 42-year-old Anaheim man fatally wounded in a quiet residential neighborhood southwest of Beach Boulevard and Warner Avenue.
The incident unfolded just before 2:30 p.m., when Huntington Beach Police Department (HBPD) officers were dispatched to the intersection of Ash Lane and Mandrell Drive following multiple reports of gunfire. Responding officers arrived to find an adult male suffering from several gunshot wounds. Emergency personnel transported him to a nearby trauma center, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities identified the victim as Ryan Daniel Ennis, a 42-year-old Anaheim resident, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
By Sunday night, investigators had located a suspect. Luis Angel Mireles, 28, of Santa Ana, was taken into custody without incident and booked on suspicion of murder and violating probation. The arrest was made in Santa Ana after officers tracked Mireles throughout the evening.
HBPD officials stated Monday that additional details are being withheld as the investigation is ongoing. The case is being handled by the department’s Major Crimes Unit in coordination with the Special Investigations Bureau. Detectives are still working to establish a full sequence of events leading up to the shooting and any possible motive.
Mireles’ history with law enforcement spans several years. According to court and inmate records, he was on probation at the time of the shooting and had been arrested in Orange County as recently as October 17. While court documents do not yet show charges related to that arrest, they do outline several other pending cases. These include allegations of stalking in violation of a restraining order, possession of illegal substances in jail, and the manufacturing or possession of a deadly weapon while incarcerated.
His criminal history also includes a 2017 conviction for carrying a loaded firearm in public, which resulted in a two-year state prison sentence. Records further show that Mireles admitted involvement in street gang activity linked to two criminal incidents in 2016.
As investigators continue to gather evidence, Huntington Beach police are urging anyone with information about Sunday’s shooting to come forward. Detectives are particularly interested in video surveillance from the surrounding area that may have captured the suspect, the victim, or the events leading up to the gunfire.
Those with information are asked to contact HBPD Detective Sgt. Anthony Pham at (714) 878-5640. Anonymous tips may also be submitted to OC Crime Stoppers at (855) TIP-OCCS (847-6227).
Police say their work is far from over, and they hope additional witness accounts and community assistance will help bring clarity to a case that has shaken a typically calm residential area.
