Lincoln Police have released the identity of the pedestrian involved in Friday’s tragic collision in east Lincoln. The woman struck in the afternoon crash was 42-year-old Katherine “Kate” Gogela, a pediatrician at Lincoln Pediatric Group and a longtime member of the city’s medical community. The news has brought immense sorrow to colleagues, families, and friends who knew her as a compassionate physician, devoted mother, and trusted presence in children’s healthcare.

According to the Lincoln Police Department, officers were called to the area south of O Street near South 84th Street and South Cherrywood Drive at 2:36 p.m. Friday for a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle. Investigators say a 19-year-old man was traveling northbound on South 84th Street when his vehicle made contact with Gogela, who was walking in the crosswalk at the time.

Emergency responders transported her to a local hospital for urgent care. Despite efforts to save her, the injuries she sustained were too severe. Police say the driver remained at the scene and has been fully cooperative with the investigation. At this stage, authorities report no signs of speeding, impairment, or reckless behavior, and no citations have been issued.

The news has deeply affected the Lincoln Pediatric Group, where Dr. Gogela had worked since 2017 as both a pediatrician and breastfeeding medicine specialist. In a heartfelt message shared on social media, the clinic described her as an essential and cherished member of their team.

“Kate was an integral part of this clinic long before most of us arrived,” the statement read. “As Dr. Mike Germer’s daughter, she began her journey here by helping in the chart room and at the front desk. After years of dedication through college, medical school, and residency, she fulfilled what so many of us had hoped: her return to this practice. She was a skilled clinician, a loyal partner, a trusted friend, and a truly wonderful wife, mother, daughter, and sister. Her example set a high standard for us all, and we miss her greatly.”

Dr. Gogela’s life was deeply rooted in Lincoln. She graduated from Lincoln East High School in 2002 before attending Creighton University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree. She later completed her medical training at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, following in the footsteps of a strong family legacy of care and service.

Friends and colleagues describe her as warm, attentive, and deeply committed to the families she served. Parents often spoke of the comfort they felt under her care, noting the thoughtful and calm way she guided them through vulnerable moments in their children’s lives.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Kate cherished her family above all else. She leaves behind her husband, three sons, and a daughter—each of whom she adored and supported with unwavering love.

As the community absorbs this heartbreaking moment, those who knew Kate continue to reflect on the kindness, dedication, and light she brought into the world—qualities that will continue to impact the lives she touched for many years to come.
